Manteo
is located on Roanoke Island near the Roanoke and the Croatan Sounds. The island is well known as being the site of the Lost Colony of Roanoke. The city of Manteo was founded in 1899, but it seems much older - in part to the Elizabethan and Old World style buildings found here. There is also a replica of a 16th century sailing vessel anchored in the harbor, and the area surrounding the town is steeped in history. Roanoke Island lies between mainland North Carolina and the Outer Banks, and in the late 1500s, was the site of the first attempt at English colonization in America. This settlement of 117 men, women and children disappeared without a trace and became known as The Lost Colony. The country's first and longest-running outdoor drama, called The Lost Colony, is performed on the island each night during the summer months, and the remains of the original settlement can be seen at Fort Raleigh National Historic Site. The town of Manteo is the cultural and commercial hub for Dare County and Roanoke Island. It has a restored waterfront with restaurants and shops and is a great place to explore. Other attractions on Roanoke Island include the Elizabethan Gardens, the North Carolina Maritime Museum and the Roanoke Island Festival Park, a 27-acre park with an interactive museum, performers dressed in period costumes, an art gallery, boardwalks through natural marshes, picnic areas and much more.

The Outer Banks weather is generally mild year round with abundant sunshine. Summer precipitation is the greatest and also the most variable, occurring mostly with thunderstorms. Daily showers are not uncommon, but neither are periods of one to two weeks without rain. Autumn is the driest season. Summer air temperatures are generally cooler along the immediate coastline than even just a few miles inland. The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on winter weather, especially on the immediate coast. Though it lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from the Gulf Stream and helps moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks. Occasionally the Gulf Stream clashes with the cold Labrador Current, causing unstable conditions. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence North Carolina weather about twice in an average year.
