Kill-Devil-Hills
is the Outer Banks' oldest township and the largest municipality in Dare County, located near Kitty Hawk and the Roanoke Sound. It's the site of the Wright Brothers first flight experiments from 1900 through 1903 (not, as most people believe, at nearby Kitty Hawk.) The Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devil Hills features full-scale reproductions of the Wright 1903 Powered Flyer along with interpretive presentations. A 60-foot granite monument towers over the site, which also includes historical markers of each attempted flight of the Wright Brothers. Years ago, the northern Outer Banks was covered by a series of sand dunes over 100 feet high, with the largest named Kill Devil Hill. It is believed that locals named the giant sand hill after a brand of run that was washed ashore during the colonial times. However it got its' colorful name, today Kill Devil Hills is a popular vacation spot with hundreds of restaurants and beach rentals, recreational activities and gorgeous scenery. Sports in the area include sound kayaking, diving, surfing, parasailing, boating, swimming and fishing. Attractions within a short drive include the North Carolina Aquarium and North Carolina Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island, the Frisco Native American Museum & Natural History Center, The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum, Cape Hatteras National Seashore and the historic Whalehead Club.

The Outer Banks weather is generally mild year round with abundant sunshine. Summer precipitation is the greatest and also the most variable, occurring mostly with thunderstorms. Daily showers are not uncommon, but neither are periods of one to two weeks without rain. Autumn is the driest season. Summer air temperatures are generally cooler along the immediate coastline than even just a few miles inland. The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on winter weather, especially on the immediate coast. Though it lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from the Gulf Stream and helps moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks. Occasionally the Gulf Stream clashes with the cold Labrador Current, causing unstable conditions. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence North Carolina weather about twice in an average year.
