Kitty-Hawk is located in Dare County in the Outer Banks region near the Currituck Sound. Although it's always associated with the Wright Brothers - the actual historic first flight took place four miles south at Kill Devil Hills. In 1903, Orville Wright telegraphed home about the triumphant first flight - from Kitty Hawk. This, along with the remoteness of the area and the unusual names, led to the confusion as to where the flight took place. Today Kitty Hawk's twelve square miles has developed into a summer resort area with shopping, restaurants, and entertainment venues and, of course, lots of beach activities. This soundside community is one of the largest on the Outer Banks, but it's retained much of its' small village atmosphere. Shaded lanes wind along marshes, and clapboard cottages and fishing boats line a series of canals that lead to the Sound. The pace is slower and reminders abound of an earlier time when Orville and Wilbur Wright made this area their home. Recreational activities range from swimming and surfing to parasailing and kite boarding. There are a number of sightseeing cruises available in the area, such as dolphin watching, bird watching and shrimping and crabbing cruises. The Wright Brothers National Memorial and Visitor Center is located in Kill Devil Hills, and other nearby attractions include the North Carolina Aquarium and Maritime Museum on Roanoke Island, the Native American Museum & Natural History Center, The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and Cape Hatteras National Seashore.

Kitty Hawk Weather & Climate

The Outer Banks weather is generally mild year round with abundant sunshine. Summer precipitation is the greatest and also the most variable, occurring mostly with thunderstorms. Daily showers are not uncommon, but neither are periods of one to two weeks without rain. Autumn is the driest season. Summer air temperatures are generally cooler along the immediate coastline than even just a few miles inland. The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on winter weather, especially on the immediate coast. Though it lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from the Gulf Stream and helps moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks. Occasionally the Gulf Stream clashes with the cold Labrador Current, causing unstable conditions. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence North Carolina weather about twice in an average year.
