Duck
, so named for the large numbers of waterfowl that once flocked to the area during migratory season, is located on the north end of the Outer Banks. It is a peaceful residential area, well known for having some of the best beaches on the Atlantic Coast. A mile long stretch through the center of town is lined with boutiques, unique gift shops and restaurants. There are no hotels in town, but many rental cottages are available and one bed & breakfast inn. A convenient trolley is available within the community for the elderly. Although quiet in nature, Duck has plenty of activities. The soundside north area offers kayaking, parasailing, jet skiing, boating, sailing and windsurfing. There is a bike path that runs the entire length of the village that can also be used for walking, jogging and inline skating. Just north of town is the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Research Pier, a fascinating world-renowned coastal research facility that is open to the public for tours. The facility was created to study the processes of the surrounding barrier islands, and over the years has collected a wealth of data during hurricanes and Nor'easters. Other nearby Outer Banks attractions include the Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Lighthouse, the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island, the Wright Brothers Memorial at Kill Devil Hills and the Corolla wild horses.

The Outer Banks weather is generally mild year round with abundant sunshine. Summer precipitation is the greatest and also the most variable, occurring mostly with thunderstorms. Daily showers are not uncommon, but neither are periods of one to two weeks without rain. Autumn is the driest season. Summer air temperatures are generally cooler along the immediate coastline than even just a few miles inland. The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on winter weather, especially on the immediate coast. Though it lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from the Gulf Stream and helps moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks. Occasionally the Gulf Stream clashes with the cold Labrador Current, causing unstable conditions. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence North Carolina weather about twice in an average year.
