Point-Harbor
is a small community that lies at the tip of a peninsula in Currituck County that is surrounded by the Currituck Sound to the east and the Albermarle Sound to the west. Highway 158 runs down the center of this long, narrow finger of land that is considered the gateway to the Outer Banks region. Directly across the Currituck Sound from Point Harbor is Kitty Hawk Beach on the Outer Banks. Dozens of attractions, historical points of interest and recreational opportunities abound in the Point Harbor region. The beaches of the area have been described as "one of the best undiscovered beaches on the East Coast," by USA Weekend. Choose from swimming, sunning, shelling, surfing, kite boarding, fishing and boating. Currituck County offers five 18-hole golf courses and one 9-hole course. There are a variety of campgrounds, marinas, hotels, motels, vacation rentals and restaurants in the area, as well. Attractions include the Mackay Island National Wildlife Refuge, the Wright Brothers National Memorial, Roanoke Island and The Lost Colony, the North Carolina Aquarium and the North Carolina Maritime Museum. To the north across the Sound to the Outer Banks are the undeveloped beaches of Corolla and Carova, and the wild horses in the Currituck National Wildlife Refuge. The Outer Banks weather is generally mild year round with abundant sunshine. Summer precipitation is the greatest and also the most variable, occurring mostly with thunderstorms. Daily showers are not uncommon, but neither are periods of one to two weeks without rain. Autumn is the driest season. Summer air temperatures are generally cooler along the immediate coastline than even just a few miles inland. The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on winter weather, especially on the immediate coast. Though it lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from the Gulf Stream and helps moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks. Occasionally the Gulf Stream clashes with the cold Labrador Current, causing unstable conditions. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence North Carolina weather about twice in an average year.
