Rodanthe
is located on the northern end of Hatteras Island and is the first town below Oregon Inlet and the Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge. At one time the entire north end of Hatteras Island was known as Chicamacomico, but the U.S. Postal Service changed the name to Rodanthe in 1874. By the early 1900s, three distinct villages had become established in the area - North Rodanthe, South Rodanthe and Clark. Later, the northern village kept the name Rodanthe, and the others were given new names once again. The village of Rodanthe is known for its' unique custom of celebrating Christmas twice each year - once on December 25 and again on "Old Christmas," which is during the first week of January. In a custom that dates back to Medieval England, the town welcomes "Old Buck," a stuffed bull that is part of the holiday celebration. Attractions near Rodanthe include the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which covers 45 square miles of the island and is home to the tallest brick lighthouse in the country. Nearby Hatteras Village is the site of the Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum and is also the outpost for the ferry to Ocracoke Island, which was once the hiding place for Blackbeard the Pirate.

Rodanthe Weather & Climate
The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on North Carolina temperatures, especially on the immediate coast. Though the Gulf Stream lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from it and moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks. Coastal fronts are common during the winter months, and can push inland, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. However, at times the cold Labrador Current passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, offsetting most of the general warming effect the Gulf Stream might otherwise have on coastal temperatures. The meeting of the two opposing currents sometimes provides a breeding ground for rough weather. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are lower than those even a few miles inland. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
