New-Bern
is the second oldest town in North Carolina, located in Craven County at the confluence of the Trent and Neuse Rivers. It also has the distinction of being the birthplace of Pepsi Cola, hometown to pharmacist Caleb Bradham, who in 1898 concocted the drink. History abounds in the town of New Bern, which was the state's first capital city. Over 150 historic landmarks can be found here, including North Carolina's Colonial Capitol and the spectacular Tryon Palace. The latter was known in Colonial times as being one of the most beautiful public buildings in America. This Georgian-style mansion served as both the home of Royal Governor William Tryon and the capitol of the Colony of North Carolina. The grounds of the palace contain extensive gardens ranging from English formal to wilderness garden areas. Other attractions in New Bern include the site of the pharmacy where Caleb Bradham first invented "Brad's Drink," which later became known as Pepsi Cola. The Fireman's Museum houses a collection of early fire-fighting equipment, as well as Civil War relics, and the Bank of the Arts has exhibits in painting, sculpture, photography and more. The Croatan National Forest in New Bern is the site of a Civil War battle that today offers camping, picnicking, hiking and fishing. New Bern is also home to several marinas and boat ramps, campgrounds and RV parks, golf courses and many municipal parks. Special events include an Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks, Mumfest in October and a Christmas Parade and Flotilla in December.

The North Carolina Coast has a moderate year-round climate. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are very comfortable and considerably lower than those even just a few miles inland. In the winter months, coastal fronts are common and can push inland, bringing warmer than normal temperatures. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters are calm, quiet and sheltered even from the sea breezes. There is no pronounced wet or dry season along the North Carolina coast, although July and August are usually the wettest months and October and November the driest. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to the North Carolina coast to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
