Oriental
is a delightful village located in Pamlico County near the Neuse River and Rattan Bay. Known as "The Sailing Capital of North Carolina," Oriental is said to have just 875 people but over 2,700 boats. People from all over come to enjoy the peaceful village atmosphere and for the exceptional sailing just off the coast of Oriental. Local sailing clubs hold races throughout the year and others use Oriental as a convenient base for trips to nearby towns like Beaufort or Ocracoke. Fishing is another popular sport in Oriental where you can hire a guide to take you out for a day of deep-sea fishing, cast off in your own boat from the Wildlife Ramp, or fish right from shore. Canoeing and kayaking in nearby streams or the Neuse River is another popular way to spend some time in the waters around Oriental, while land lovers enjoy the hiking and biking opportunities. Oriental holds a number of special events throughout the year including the Oriental Cup Regatta, the Tarpon Tournament, The Running of the Dragon, and the Croaker Festival. One of the most colorful events is the "Spirit of Christmas" held the second weekend in December, when Santa arrives on a boat, there is a parade of decorated dogs, and boats compete for the best light decorations.

Oriental Weather & Climate

The North Carolina Coast has a moderate year-round climate. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are very comfortable and considerably lower than those even just a few miles inland. In the winter months, coastal fronts are common and can push inland, bringing warmer than normal temperatures. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters are calm, quiet and sheltered even from the sea breezes. There is no pronounced wet or dry season along the North Carolina coast, although July and August are usually the wettest months and October and November the driest. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to the North Carolina coast to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
