Morehead-City
is located in Carteret County on North Carolina's central Crystal Coast. It is a mainland seaport town situated on the banks of Newport River, opposite the town of Beaufort. With a rich maritime history, Morehead City is home to several marine research facilities, including The Institute of Marine Sciences and The North Carolina Division of Marine Fisheries. Also a deep-water port, Morehead City serves as a port of the Second Division of the US Marine Corps at Camp Lejeune. The town is known for its' fishing and boating and seafood restaurants, with lots of antique shops, boutiques and other specialty shops in the area. Morehead City is also near the Croatan National Forest, Bogue Sound and Intercoastal Waterway, so outdoor recreation is key to the area. Enjoy all types of beach activities such as swimming, sunning, shelling and windsurfing, plus hiking along nature trails at nearby Fort Macon State Park. The community of Atlantic Beach is a short drive from Morehead City and has a beach causeway that offers amusement park rides and a variety of shops, restaurants and other activities. The North Carolina Aquarium is in nearby Pine Knoll Shores, and other attractions within an easy drive from Morehead City includes the North Carolina Maritime Museum, the Beaufort State Historic Site, Cape Lookout National Seashore and the Carteret County Museums of History & Art.

Latitude accounts for some climatic variations in the state of North Carolina, as do soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on temperatures, as well, especially on the immediate coast. Coastal fronts are common during the winter months, and can push inland, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. However, at times the cold Labrador Current passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, offsetting most of the general warming effect the Gulf Stream might otherwise have on coastal temperatures. The meeting of the two opposing currents sometimes provides a breeding ground for rough weather. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are lower than those even a few miles inland. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
