Salvo
is located on the northern end of Hatteras Island, once known as Clark or Clarksville. Today, Salvo is the third village in the Rodanthe-Waves-Salvo trio. Originally, the entire area was called Chicamacomico Banks, but by the early 1900s, three distinct villages had become established. Clark, the southernmost of the three, was renamed Salvo in 1901. Salvo is a working village, and a drive through the older soundside section takes you past fishermen hauling in their catch, stacked crab pots and fish boxes. A National Park Service located south of the community has become popular among windsurfers and is also a nice spot for a picnic. The Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is near Salvo, and the Cape Hatteras National Seashore covers most of the island and offers swimming, shelling, surfing, fishing and other beach activities. At nearby Hatteras Village, visitors can catch the ferry to Ocracoke Island, once the hiding place of Blackbeard the Pirate. Today, this 16-mile long island includes the village of Ocracoke, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and also the 1823 Ocracoke Lighthouse, the historic British Cemetery, and dozens of unique shops. Other attractions near Salvo include Roanoke Island, Nags Head, The Wright Brothers National Memorial, the North Carolina Aquarium and the North Carolina Maritime Museum.

Salvo Weather & Climate
The Gulf Stream has some direct effect on North Carolina temperatures, especially on the immediate coast. Though the Gulf Stream lies some 50 miles offshore, warm water eddies spin off from it and moderate the winter air temperatures along the Outer Banks. Coastal fronts are common during the winter months, and can push inland, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. However, at times the cold Labrador Current passes between the Gulf Stream and the North Carolina coast, offsetting most of the general warming effect the Gulf Stream might otherwise have on coastal temperatures. The meeting of the two opposing currents sometimes provides a breeding ground for rough weather. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are lower than those even a few miles inland. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
