Laurel-Springs
is located in northwestern North Carolina between the towns of Jefferson and Sparta on Highway 88 near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Spectacular mountain scenery and outdoor recreation abound in the Laurel Springs area, which lies near the New River and Mt. Jefferson State Parks. The New River is popular for its' canoeing and tubing, and it's said, "there's no better experience than to hike to the summit of Mount Jefferson." Other activities include fishing, swimming, mountain biking, horseback riding, skiing and golf. Laurel Springs is home to a family-owned winery that offers individualized tours and wine tastings. (Two of their wines, Pinot Grigio and Bergamais, took home Gold Medals from the Mid-Atlantic Southeastern Wine Competition in October 2004.) A short drive west of Laurel Springs takes you to the sister cities of Jefferson and West Jefferson. The community of Jefferson is the oldest town in North Carolina's "High Country," and both towns offer great restaurants, specialty shops and art, music and theater at the Ashe County Arts Center and Ashe Civic Center. Other attractions near Laurel Springs include Grandfather Mountain, the Tweetsie Railroad, the Blue Ridge Parkway, Sugar Mountain Ski Resort and the popular mountain villages of Boone, Blowing Rock and Banner Elk. Laurel Springs is just over an hour from Winston-Salem and two hours from Charlotte.

The Northwest Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in season. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
