Crumpler is a township located in Ashe County in the northwest corner of the state atop the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. It is near the New River State Park and the Blue Ridge Parkway. This breathtakingly beautiful area of North Carolina is surrounded by rugged mountains and peaceful farms and meadows. The New River is thought to be one of the oldest rivers in North America and was dedicated as a National Wild and Scenic River in 1976. The State Park covers more than 1,500 acres and provides canoeing, fishing, picnicking, hiking and camping. Canoeing is especially popular in New River State Park, where gentle waters, mild rapids and gorgeous scenery make it a natural for beginners and families with children. However, even more experienced rafters enjoy the course (with higher water levels usually found in May and June.) Parts of the river are also suitable for tubing at certain times of the year. Fishing is great on the north and south forks of the river, and several hiking trails can be accessed inside the park. Crumpler is also near the popular tourist attraction of Shatley Springs. First discovered in 1890 by Marvin Shatley, the "miraculous healing powers" of the spring soon spread and it was turned into a resort. Today, people still visit the springs, as well as the family-style restaurant located at the site.

Crumpler Weather & Climate

The Northwest Blue Ridge Mountains range from 800 feet to over 6,600 feet and topography affects the local weather. Expect temperatures to be 10 to 20 degrees cooler on the mountaintops than in the cities below. Spring is unpredictable, particularly at the higher elevations. Summer is warm and humid, but more pleasant at the higher elevations, with temperatures rarely reaching 90 degrees. Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are common in season. Winter is generally moderate, but extreme conditions can occur at the mountain peaks. It's not unusual to have warm temperatures in the valleys and snow in the higher areas. In the lowlands, snows of one inch or more occur just 1-5 times per year. More frequent and deeper snows fall at the higher elevations.
