Cedar-Island
is a barrier island located in the coastal region of North Carolina known as "Down East." In this pristine area, residents have maintained a simple lifestyle, (and even have their own way of speaking,) for almost 300 years, due mostly to the sheer remoteness of the region. Small fishing villages with few other businesses, except small schools and churches, largely make up this region. There are no official geographic boundaries to "Down East," but locals say it begins on the east side of the North River. From there a broad, marshy peninsula extends northeastward, bounded by the Neuse River and the Pamlico Sound on the north and the Cape Lookout National Seashore on the south and east. At the northeastern tip of the peninsula is Cedar Island. It's the mainland terminus of Highway 12, where motorists can board one of the state supported ferries for a two-hour ride across Pamlico Sound to Ocracoke Island. Some local historians say that Cedar Island was actually the site of the famous "Lost Colony," - not further north on Roanoke Island as popularly believed. Today Cedar Island is home to the Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge, a well-preserved tidewater ecosystem, with thousands of acres of marshlands and pine hammocks that supports hundreds of species of wildlife. Other nearby attractions include Harker's Island and the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum, Cape Lookout National Seashore, the Museum of Coastal Carolina, charter fishing, beach combing, golf and horseback riding.

Cedar Island Weather & Climate
The North Carolina Coast has a moderate year-round climate. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are very comfortable and considerably lower than those even just a few miles inland. In the winter months, coastal fronts are common and can push inland, bringing warmer than normal temperatures. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters are calm, quiet and sheltered even from the sea breezes. There is no pronounced wet or dry season along the North Carolina coast, although July and August are usually the wettest months and October and November the driest. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to the North Carolina coast to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
