Little-Switzerland
got its name from early residents who thought the scenery resembled the Swiss Jura Mountains. It is located in the western mountains of North Carolina within the Pisgah National Forest along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Little Switzerland is known for its breathtaking views, waterfalls, pristine rivers, streams and wildflowers. It is an easy drive from Asheville and begins at the Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 331. An abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities await visitors in Little Switzerland, including hiking, fishing, whitewater rafting, camping, horseback riding, gemstone mining (a rockhound's paradise!) and golf. It's a winter sports enthusiast's dream with several ski resorts within an easy driving distance. Enjoy Alpine skiing, snowboarding, sledding and snowshoeing. Little Switzerland's Mt. Mitchell is 6,684 feet and offers spectacular views, hiking trails, a concession stand and restaurant. Other attractions in the Little Switzerland area include Grandfather Mountain, Linville Falls and Linville Gorge, Blowing Rock, the Tweetsie Railroad, Crabtree Meadows and Falls and the Mountain Gateway Museum.

Little Switzerland Weather & Climate

North Carolina has the greatest range of altitude of any state east of the Mississippi River, ranging from sea level along the Atlantic coast to 6,684 feet at the summit of Mt. Mitchell in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Latitude accounts for climatic variations, as does soils, plant cover and inland bodies of water. There is no distinct wet or dry season in North Carolina. Average snowfall in the southern mountains is around 16 inches, with some of the higher mountain peaks and upper slopes receiving as much as 50 inches per year. July is usually the wettest month. Summer rainfall is the most variable; daily showers are not uncommon, but periods of one to two weeks without rain are also normal. Autumn is the driest season, and also sees the greatest drop-off of temperature in the month of October.
