Lake-Waccamaw is a village of just over 1,000 residents, located in Columbus County near Lake Waccamaw and the Lake Waccamaw State Park. The lake is the largest of the natural Carolina Bay Lakes and is estimated to be 250,000 years old. It is a very unique freshwater lake, oval in shape and approximately five miles by seven miles, fed by Big Creek and the surrounding swamp waters. Organic matter from decaying vegetation of the swamps makes the water dark in color, or "tea-colored." The lake also contains many different species, including the Waccamaw Silverside, also known as skipjack or glass minnow, a small, almost transparent fish with a silvery stripe along each side. Many other species, rare plants and endangered animals, which are found no place else on Earth, can be found in Lake Waccamaw. The Carolina Bays are one of the biggest geological mysteries of the eastern U.S., and from Lake Waccamaw you can also get a view of The Green Swamp - another botanical wonder. Activities in Lake Waccamaw State Park include boating and fishing, hiking, camping, picnicking and park rangers hold regular educational and interpretive programs. Several interesting hiking trails are available in the park, and four primitive camping areas are nestled among the trees at Lake Waccamaw.

Lake Waccamaw Weather & Climate

Coastal North Carolina has a temperate climate with no extremes in temperature. Summer air temperatures along the immediate coastline are usually considerably lower than those even a few miles inland. Opposite the ocean, across the narrow barrier islands behind most beaches, are the "Sounds". These protected inland waters are calm, quiet and sheltered from the sea breezes. In winter, the Gulf Stream helps moderate air temperature and coastal fronts are common, bringing warmer than expected temperatures to the coastal areas. Sometimes, strong low-pressure systems clash with the Gulf Stream and develop into major storms, causing rain along the coast and over states to the north as well. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to North Carolina to influence the weather about twice in an average year; about once in ten years they are strong enough to cause significant damage.
