Charlotte
is a beautiful, clean city that is a welcoming place for tourists who come here to visit the historical sights, museums, gardens - and for the sports. The city lies near the border of North Carolina/South Carolina and the metropolitan area is comprised of ten counties in North Carolina and three counties in South Carolina. It is the number one travel destination in the Carolinas, due in part to its central location - just a three-hour drive to both the scenic mountains or the pristine Carolina beaches. In Charlotte, there's plenty to choose from - there are the Charlotte Hornets, the city's NBA team, and the Charlotte Sting, the WNBA team. Ericsson Stadium is home to the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte's NFL team, and for baseball fans, the Triple A Charlotte Knights play at a stadium just over the state line in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Last, but certainly not least, is the Charlotte Motor Speedway, a mile and a half track that draws thousands of fans each year. However, sports aren't the only attraction in Charlotte. The city is home to the University of North Carolina Charlotte, and history plays an important role in the city, where you can visit the Charlotte Museum of History, the Historic Latta Plantation, or take a trolley ride at the Charlotte Historic Trolley Museum. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens is 110 acres of themed gardens, fountains and hiking trails, and Ribbon Walk is a 137-acre botanical garden with a fine environmental education center. The city has 14,000 acres of parks and 19 recreational centers with picnic areas, hiking trails, swimming pools, lighted tennis courts and athletic fields. For even more outdoor fun, Lake Norman, North Carolina's largest man made lake, is just north of the city and offers every type of water sport imaginable.

The Heartland, near the city of Charlotte, has a moderate, four-season climate. The single most important factor in the state that influences weather is altitude. The Heartland, or central part of the state, is partially protected by the western mountain ranges from the cold air that moves southeastward across the central States. Extreme cold temperatures are rare outside the mountains. The warmest days are found in the interior rather than near the coast. Autumn is the driest season and the season of most rapidly changing temperature. There is no distinct wet or dry season in the state, although July is usually the wettest month. North Carolina is outside the principal tornado area of the U.S., but still averages two or three per year, mostly east of the Mountains in the spring. Tropical hurricanes come close enough to influence the weather about twice in an average year.
