Brasstown
is unique in that it lies in both Clay County and Cherokee County in the southwestern mountains of North Carolina, near the Nantahala National Forest and the Georgia border. It's a wonderful artisan community; home to the world renowned John C. Campbell Folk School. Against the backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains, the John C. Campbell Folk School sits on a 380-acre campus/farm in Brasstown, and offers people a peaceful place to come and experience a "blend of history, art and natural beauty." The school has been designated a "Historic District" by the National Register of Historic Places, and offers classes in everything from spinning and weaving to storytelling. Other attractions near Brasstown include Lake Hiwassee and the Hiwassee Dam, Lake Chatuge and the Chattahoochee National Forest. Outdoor recreation is plentiful, including fishing and boating, white water rafting and kayaking, hiking and mountain biking, horseback riding and gem mining. In addition, county fairs and small town festivals abound in the area, including America's oldest wagon train, which is the highlight of the Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration in the nearby town of Andrews. Both Cherokee County and Clay County also have craft shows, flea markets, theaters, restaurants and historical points of interest for visitors to enjoy during their visit to the area.

The Mountains, due to their mild summer temperatures, have always been a welcome escape from the heat at the lower elevations. Midsummer afternoon temperatures average only around 80 degrees at elevations of 3,000 feet or higher. Nights are crisp and cool, but seldom too cold for outdoor activities or camping. In winter, snowfall is likely most years, but ski resorts use snowmaking equipment to ensure a reliable supply. Large amounts of snow and extreme low temperatures are rare except at the highest peaks. Rainfall is common in spring and summer. In spring, storm systems that bring cold weather southward reach North Carolina less often and less forcefully than in other parts of the country. Occasional invasions of cool dry air from the north continue during the summer, but are of short duration. Fall has warm days and cool nights and is the driest period.
